I am finally here. It has been months but I have inevitably arrived. AMERIKA. The country of golden opportunities, the shining beacon of a hopeful future - my new home! So overwhelming. There are so many of us here, the immigrants. We all get off the same boat, in the same place. All kinds, from so many nations, speaking all different languages...

I wanted to find at least one, one of my own.

Level #2 "The People"
Task for all
I saw people celebrating in the street. Such unusual people these Americans, walking about, shouting, waving. I've never seen such things back in Bialystok, where I grew up. We celebrated in our home or in our Shul, not on the street. I wondered, maybe this is how Americans celebrate their holidays? Curious, I followed them into the city. And what luck - a dime on the ground! My first American money - I was rich! I could do anything!

I won't forget that place either. 38 years from that day I stood in that spot again and watched a great man walk this same street. He was a revolutionary, a warrior and a builder. A leader of the tribe.

The prompt #1 for all (15 minutes)

The prompt #2 for all (30 minutes)

Level #3 "Subway"
Task for all
I stood on this BroadWay in awe. I've never seen anything like it.

It towered above all else, above the very clouds. It scraped the sky and might as well have been the tallest building in the entire world. It drew me and I followed. As I sat in the park across the street I wondered how I might one day be one of the well dressed gentlemen allowed in. For now, all of its doors were closed to me. I later learned that it had only officially opened this year. I needed to get moving - so much to do my first day! Where is the America they promised - the land of opportunity and the New York streets paved with Gold? I needed to move up. I suddenly remembered - I had money!

I knew that only 9 years before they built an underground train - the first underground train in America. I heard its fast and I was in a hurry! I went to the closest station - the very first station. Never did I expect that a practical place like a train station could look like a theater! The shine, the beauty, the elegance! I was so excited that I got on the train going the wrong way, good thing it only turned around. I couldn't take my eyes off of those walls my face was glued to the window watching. The whole station was beautiful except the out of place booth at the very end.

NOTE: Due to weekend construction there are complications with this assignment. There will be agents posted at the main entrances to the correct station. FIND AN AGENT before proceeding to avoid serious problems with authorities. If you do not see a recognizable agent inside, you're in the wrong place...

The prompt #1 for all (20 minutes)
Take the 6 train, southbound.

The prompt #2 for all (30 minutes)
Yes, we know it's the last stop. Take the 6 around the loop. Look for a sign on the platform for where it's best to board the train.

The prompt #3 for all (40 minutes)
Take the last car. Look right, you'll see the old City Hall station.
Look for the code through the window.

Level #4 "Hunger"
Task for all
I was beginning to feel very hungry and my stomach growled. On the train I met a well dressed, educated man. His name was Isaac Singer, a writer who spoke my language. Isaac told me of a place where good comrades - educated men and many Jews come to exchange words and often leave food outside for their needy brothers. It's usually in a locked box, unlocked with the current year.

He forgot the address, but gave me this crumpled photo of the place.

NOTE: The last word of the 'quote' begins with a missing letter "U".
The relevance of this note will be clear later in the level.

On the subway train I met a well dressed, educated man. His name was Isaac Singer, a writer who spoke my language. He said to me: "You're new here and will need a job to feed yourself. My friend Morris, a shrewd young man like you, once worked in a pharmacy, somewhere on East Broadway. His real job, though was a distribution business he ran under-the-counter. Everybody wants his product, but the law says you can't mail it... If is is still in the neighborhood, check it out. I heard they are hiring delivery boys." And off I went...

I got a feeling Reizl took a liking to me. She asked how long I've been with the Benevolent Association, I wasn't sure what she meant but the benevolent sounded good. She said that she would let me take her to the theater next Saturday night if I helped her with one favor. Turns out, just a week ago, Frankie the Gunsmith stopped by and left without paying. 'I'd pick up the money myself', she said, 'But with all those coppers around, I can't show my face there'. Without much thought, I've agreed to collect for her, the decision I would regret in just a few hours.

Finding the store wasn't hard. For a gunsmith, Frank sure was in a prime location. I walked right into his store and asked for Reizl's money. The short guy on the right hit first. The other two followed. Frank had lots of friends. I don't recall much afterwards, but as I lay on cobble stones in front of the store, I worried about how I would explain my dirty clothing to Reizl on Saturday...My mind was wandering, I tried to pull myself together by focusing...

Level #11 "Redemption"
Task for all
It had been a long day and has filled me with concern, worry and despair. It is in these times that us Jews must pray to Hashem. But where can I pray in this strange and foreign land? I sought to ask my fellow Jews for help finding a shul. Various people sent me all over the place. I was sent to:

(1) 152 E. 3rd Street
(2) 351 E. Houston St
(3) 151 E. Houston St
(4) 162 Eldridge St
(5) 52 Pitt St

Looking at these 5 wrong places on my map I immediately knew where I must go...

When I got there, I saw how this once great shul was falling apart. But perhaps like Jacob I can find a ladder or stairway to ascend, to commune with Hashem, but I must be careful; a congregation is only as strong as its weakest step.

As I came out of the derelict building an old Jew noticed me and asked if I was looking for a Minyan. "I am looking for my own people" I answered. He asked me where I was from and I told him.

"Why, you are in luck! The congragation from your home town is just 4 blocks away!"

I rushed to meet my countrymen, hoping to see old friends among them. I found the synagogue and went in to discover just how much artistry went into these walls.
